Mt Taranaki / Egmont (3,518m)
Magnificent and beautiful
Mount Taranaki is the second to highest in New Zealand's North Island and stands alone in the west. It dominates the province.
Rising 1500 metres from the highest road end, Mt Taranaki is a significant challenge. It requires a good standard of fitness,
walking skills, physical endurance and respect to reach its summit.
The sleeping volcano
Mt Taranaki / Egmont is a sleeping volcano situated centrally on the Taranaki Cape with half of its circumference only 25km from the Tasman Sea.
This can mean very rapid and dramatic changes in the weather as humid air often sweeps in from the sea cloaking the mountain in cloud.
Temperature variations of up to 15 degrees Celsius are possible within an hour and the cloud can restrict a once sunny 300km view to a mere
5 metre "white out".
Unpredictable seasonal snowfall
Snow levels vary from year to year but in winter there is always snow and ice above 1500m and in the summer (December to March) often
ice in the crater and summit region. Snowfall is possible at any time of the year and getting off route can mean steep and tedious travel.
Unforgettable adventure
All the same the mountain offers safe and exhilarating climbing when accompanied by someone who knows the mountain well.
For your summit climb of Mt Egmont / Taranaki it is strongly recommended you hire a mountain guide so you can enjoy your time on this beautiful but sometimes dangerous mountain.
