What you can look forward to
The Kaitake Range (682m) in Taranaki's Egmont National Park, is the backdrop to the popular surfing township of Oakura. The lowland forest this area is surprisingly different from the rest of the park. A wide diversity of semi-coastal rain forest and smaller plants grow in profusion over the eroded remnants what was once a volcano larger than Mount Taranaki itself.
Rural beginningsYou'll begin your walk at the end of Surrey Hills Road and climb through farmland, following marker poles to the edge of Egmont National Park. Davies Track will lead you through bush land to Patuha Trig, the summit of this smaller peak . You'll drop down the western slopes via Waimoku Track to Lucy's Gulley. This popular area of the park features a stand of Californian redwood trees, planted in the 1930s and protected by a special dispensation in the Egmont National Park Management Plan.
If you have an interest in native flora you'll love the luxuriant nikau, titoke, kohekohe, and puriri trees. Pukeatea and karaka also tower over silver fern and a range of smaller native plants.
